St Lucia
is amongst the most beautiful of the Caribbean islands, with tropical rainforests,
fine sandy coves and majestic cliffs. The outstanding beauty of the dramatic Pitons
is St.Lucia's trademark. The island was fought over by the French and
the British for three centuries before being recognized as a British Colony in
1814. St Lucia became an independent nation in 1979 and remains a member of the
British Commonwealth.
Today the main industries are banana growing and tourism,
the former losing ground and the latter expanding. The majority of the hotels
and resorts are in the 4- to 5-Star bracket. As well as British and other Europeans,
American tourists are arriving in increasing numbers. Most hotels and resorts
are on the picturesque West Coast. As the International Airport is in the southeast
corner of the island, most visitors have a journey of just over an hour to their
hotels. Alternatively, a 10 -minute helicopter transfer is available at extra
cost. Diving is a major sport on St.Lucia, in particular Anse Chastenet
is highly rated amongst the world's top dive sites. St.
Lucia is known for its annual Jazz Festival, which usually runs 2nd week in May
and the last Thursday-Sunday. Top performers such as Herbie Hancock, Al Jareau
and George Benson have performed at Sandals. Sandals and Beaches
Both Sandals and Beaches provide quality all-inclusive holidays.
The "Sandals" resorts are exclusively for couples, while "Beaches"
caters for families, couples and singles. There are three "Sandals"
resorts on St.Lucia - Sandals St Lucia Golf Resort and Spa, Sandals Halcyon Resort
and the new Sandals Grande St Lucian Beach Resort & Spa. We stayed
at Sandals St Lucia Golf Resort and Spa, but all three welcome exchange visits
from guests staying at the other resorts, for meals and to make use of the facilities.
A shuttle bus runs between the resorts - stay at one, play at three!
The resort is set next to the sea, amongst beautifully
landscaped gardens. Facilities include a number of restaurants, pools, fitness
centers, shops, beauty treatments and spa, massage, tennis courts and a 9-hole
golf course. Watersports are available from the beach.

The six restaurants offer a varied choice, so there
is no danger of culinary boredom. From French Gourmet to American Ranch Barbeque,
from Italian to Japanese and of course Caribbean Creole, they all have one thing
in common - very high standards of food and service. There is an exchange dining
arrangement with the other Sandals resorts on the Island, so you can extend your
choice of restaurants even further. All-inclusive means just that, when
it comes to eating, drinking and service but there are moderate charges for some
facilities, including golf. The Golf Course is next to the resort. Clubs and shoes
can be hired. Lessons are available. A local caddy is compulsory (a good idea!)
and his fee is at your discretion.

| | | There
are no less than 12 grades of accommodation within the resort, so Sandals St.Lucia
can cater for a wide range of budgets. The rooms in the main buildings are spacious
and well furnished. However as the largest pool (also the social hub of the resort)
is immediately in front of the buildings, these rooms are most suitable for couples
looking for a lively time. Other accommodation is spread up the hillside, away
from the beach but still overlooking the sea; the further away from the pool and
the sea, the quieter the position. |
At
the top of the hill, and at the top of the range, the luxurious Concierge Suites
on Sunset Bluff offer magnificent views over the ocean. These suites have
double bedroom, bathroom with marble spa bath, a beautifully furnished living
room and a balcony or terrace. Room service and mini-bar are included
at no extra charge. There is a pool, a fitness room, a business centre and a restaurant
next to the suites. A wonderful location for a honeymoon!
