Cape Town and The Western Cape

The Western Cape is South Africa's most popular tourist area,
attracting some 23 million visitors a year. From naturalists to extreme sports enthusiasts, or simply sun-seekers, there's something for everyone!

Extreme sports enthusiasts can go diving with great white sharks (they lower you down in a cage) or there are flights in ex-RAF fighter jets. Abseiling down the face of Table Mountain is another interesting possibility, as is tandem paragliding.

Gentler pursuits include hiking, moonlit walks on Lion's Head, Mountain Biking and sailing on Table Bay. A trip to the dramatic Cape of Good Hope is essential.

The Cape is a golfers' paradise. Whale watchers, ornithologists and botanists are also well catered for.

The garden route, from Swellendam in the West to Port Elizabeth in the East, via George, Knysna and Plettenberg, is an area of truly outstanding natural beauty. The Addo Elephant Park is well worth a visit, while the fabulous Shamwari Game Reserve near Port Elizabeth offers the full safari experience.

The cost of living is low by UK standards and the exchange rate is extremely favourable for UK visitors.

In and Around Cape Town

It's worth spending a good few days in and around Cape Town. Not to be missed are the cable car to the top of Table Mountain; The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront with its shops restaurants; the penguins at Boulders Bay; The Kirstenbosch Gardens; Camps Bay and Clifton for some superb beaches; and the wine district of Constantia, less than 30 minutes away by car. There is a terrific restaurant in Constantia, called La Colombe, part of the Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate. Pre-booking essential - dinner is usually booked up well in advance but it's not so busy at lunchtime, and just as pleasant.

Also in Constantia, the Buitenverwachting Estate runs a wonderful picnic lunch at tables on lawns under the oak trees. A little further East, the Vergelegen Estate is a beautifully preserved 18th Century Manor House and Gardens in the town of Somerset West, off Laurensford Road - not to be missed!

Getting around
The freedom and go-anywhere flexibility of car hire makes it a natural choice for getting around. Driving is on the left so it is easy for UK visitors. Cape Point is an interesting day out and on the way back Boulders Bay and the penguin colony are just north of Simonstown. The Chapmans Peak scenic drive is unfortunately closed as a through road, but you can still drive part of the way and take in the amazing views over Hout Bay.

If you wish to cut a dash in something a little more exciting than the bog-standard hre car, then Cape Cobra Hire is the answer - see below! Contact Dean Gillatt on (+00) 27 83 321 9193.

Security
Generally the Cape is a safe area for tourists - tourism is vital to the economy and the security of visitors is a top priority. As well as the police you will see licenced private security firms everywhere. It pays to excercise common sense - avoid parading expensive jewellery and take care with valuables.

Most cars have doors lockable from a central button inside the car, which is a good idea. In Cape Town, there are often Parking Attendants who will look after your car for a fee; this too is a good idea.
